JohnWP Verified Buyer –
I bought TheSky Fusion from the good folks at High Point, and it arrived so fast, even after dire warnings of backorders. Thank you HPS!
I carefully checked the hardware list before purchase and was satisfied that I had a good match: Celestron CGX, Celestron Focus Motor, Celestron OAG with ZWO ASI cameras for imaging and guiding. You take
a look above. Did I miss something?
The package contains a very well packed Fusion device, a dovetail hex wrench, startup instructions, power cable and a small voltmeter. The Fusion looks and feels like top-quality engineered and manufactured equipment.
Installation was easy, following the supplied instructions. The Fusion’s WiFi access point came up right away and linked to a nearby laptop web browser. I liked to idea of control though any standards-compliant web browser -instantly huge compatibility.
Next we found how to configure the power control and successfully delivered power to the CGX, Focus motors and cameras. So far so good. Even remote operation of TheSky worked well.
The first wrinkle came when it appears that the CGX (maybe other Celestron mounts?) must connect through a locally initialized Celestron hand controller, NextStar or StarSense. Fusion does not work without the hand controller. The Focus Motor was selected, and the USB connection chosen. The Fusion crashed on every connection attempt to connect. I am now informed that the Celestron Focus Motor USB is not compatible with Fusion. The only workarounds appear to be : use the hand controller or install another focus control. ZWO’s EAF is said to work.
Next we tried to bring up the ASI cameras for imaging and guiding. Both work briefly before repeatedly timing out. It appears this is expected with ZWO ASI cameras. The recommended cure appears to be either try a short high quality USB cable or get another camera.
Feeling somewhat battered by this experience, I decided to check for a software package update. Download from a PC to a USB drive went without a hitch, and the USB mounted on the Fusion easily, with the automatic update process running to completion. After update, some cosmetic improvements were noted, but hardware troubles persist.
This Fusion is a device with huge potential, and it so nearly works. IMHO, for a premium price, at least basic solid performance should be expected out of the box. The hardware list should not include devices that are known not to work, at least until their outstanding issues are fixed.
Our Fusion is now back in its box. We regret updating the firmware, as the Fusion is now not as bought, and we suspect unreturnable. We’d It recommend it to a non-Celestron-ASI owner, but I have no idea if other hardware list problems exist also. We’d just love it to actually work with Celestron and ASI.
(For now, we are using CPWI (USB, no hand controller) and ASI Suite on an old netbook running with a $25 W**mart lawn mower battery, A free VPN is used for remote access. All the hardware works again.)
