Change Your Imaging Filters Electronically with the ZWO EFW!

Imaging filters are an excellent way to cut through light pollution, add contrast and detail to deep sky images, and isolate individual wavelengths for truly incredible imagery. With the ZWO 7 Position Electronic Filter Wheel for 2″ Filters you can add near instant access to seven 2″ filters to your imaging train, making a filter changes an easy process!

With the wide variety of filters on the market today, it is easy to end up with a large number of filters that create certain pallets or excel in various situations. While filter drawers are a great option that allow you to switch between a few filters, they do require you to manually swap things in and out which means less automation possibilities on top of the need to safely and cleanly store all your filters. This is where a filter wheel comes in – allowing you to store multiple filters in the imaging train and providing quick swap functionality for on-the-fly adjustment or automation needs.

Direct ZWO Pro APS-C and Full-Frame Camera Integration

The ZWO 7 Position Electronic Filter Wheel is designed to integrate seamlessly with ZWO’s APS-C and Full-Frame cameras, either as a standalone accessory or in conjunction with the ZWO OAG-L. The filter wheel accomplishes this via passthrough holes on both front and back covers that allow cameras and the OAG-L to be screwed directly to these components. For those looking to add a filter wheel without the OAG-L, an M54 external to M48 internal threading adapter is included which connects the front cover with the 16.5mm spacer included with most ZWO Pro cameras for an imaging train set at the industry standard 55mm of backfocus. The filter wheel additionally features M54 threading on the rear cover, which provides the flexibility to create imaging trains without a direct camera connection!

    Direct Connection Installation

Directly connecting this filter wheel to your cooled astronomy camera is easy! All you’ll need besides the filter wheel and camera is the screwdriver and four of the six M2.5 screws included in the box with this filter wheel.

Start by removing the eight screws that attach the filter wheel cover, and remove the cover. When installing a camera with the tilt plate on, the wheel assembly can remain attached; however to make the process easier this can be removed by unscrewing the the three Philips head screws at the center of the wheel, and then lifting it off of the center hub. Set the camera down so that it is facing upwards (ensuring that it is on a large work surface so that nothing takes a tumble!) and roughly line up the holes near the filter window of the filter wheel with the holes on the camera tilt plate. Once you’ve roughly lined these up, focus on lining up one hole with its corresponding connection point on the camera, and then thread in one of the M2.5 screws. Don’t tighten this down all the way just yet. Repeat for the remaining holes – note that if you’ve left the wheel installed, you may need to rotate this to uncover one of the installation holes. Once all four screws are installed, tighten all four down securely to lock the filter wheel and camera together. You can now reinstall the filter wheel (if removed), any filters you wish to use, and the filter wheel cover!

4: Reinstall Filter Wheel and Reattach Front Cover

Please note: A user-supplied T2 Tilter is required for attachment to 4/3″, 1″, or small format cooled cameras that do not include a tilt plate, such as the ASI533 Pro, ASI294 Pro, ASI585 Pro, or ASI183 Pro.

Capacity, Convenient Control, and Comprehensive Accessories!

The ZWO 7 Position Electronic Filter Wheel for 2″ filters is packed with space for a wide number of 2″ filters includes industry standard PC control features, and comes with number of handy accessories out of the box to make adding this into your imaging rig an easy process.

    Filter Compatability
This filter wheel accommodates a generous number of filters, with seven total positions. This allows you to have on demand access to a wide variety of filters – you could keep an LRGB set and SHO set of filters in your imaging setup at all times! This accepts the common 2″ mounted thread-in style of filter, provided they are less than 7.5mm in height above the threading (as most 2″ filters on the market today are!), as well as 50.4mm +/- 0.5mm unmounted filters.

    Means of Control
Control of the filter wheel is handled via an external device connect to the USB 2.0 port on this product. To ensure wide compatibility, ZWO has ensured this is not just compatible with their popular ASIAIR systems but also the widely used ASCOM standard – allowing you to control this from a wide variety of PC software! This often allows for not just easy filter changes, but also the ability to schedule filter changes in the planning tools commonly available with these programs – opening up automation possibilities.

    Included Accessories
Included in the box with the ZWO 7 Position Electronic Filter Wheel are two threaded M54 external to M48 internal adapters, one a ring that does not effect back spacing and one a flanged adapter that adds 2mm of space; as well as an M54 external to M42 internal threaded adapter ring. These allow the filter wheel to be adapted into a variety of imaging setups, and to help eliminate light leaks in the sleek OAG-L & compatible camera direct connection setups ZWO has included darkening rings. M2.5 screws are included to connect the filter wheel directly to compatible cameras, and a set of M2 screws & filter masks to allow unmounted filters to be installed safely and securely. Finally, a screwdriver and USB 2.0 cable come in the box to help with installation and connecting the filter wheel to your device.

Stable filter wheel working smoothly and reliable with N. I. N. A. at a remote site. It’s the second one I bought (one for home, one for my remote telescope).
