The ASI462MM Monochrome Astronomy Camera from ZWO!
The ASI462MM monochrome astronomy camera delivers incredible planetary, lunar, and solar astrophotography performance. Sony’s STARVIS technology provides the ASI462MM with qualities such as a high QE value, low read out noise, and large dynamic range. These aspects make the ASI462MM a must have among any astrophotographer’s set up!
The 1936×1096 resolution Sony IMX462 sensor features a small pixel size of 2.9um for stunning detail on our solar system neighbors. The adoption of a back illuminated sensor design maximizes the sensitivity of this camera for an increase in signal collection. Useful additions such as an onboard DDR3 memory buffer optimizes its high speed imaging capabilities, letting this camera run at 136FPS in full 2MP resolution. Maintaining image quality is the integrated HCG mode which preserves dynamic range while also lowering readout noise. Use the USB3.0 for fast image transfer or turn this ASI462MM into a highly capable guide camera with the included ST4 port! Pairing the craftsmanship from ZWO with Sony’s innovative technology, this ASI462MM camera is sure to impress!
A High Performance, Professional Camera for Astrophotography
Let’s Dig into the Data!
What sets one astrophotography camera apart from another? How is performance measured? Camera and sensor manufacturers provide certain interconnected specifications that give insight into the performance of a camera. These measurements include quantum efficiency, read noise, full well depth, gain, dark current, and dynamic range. While the graphs provided by the manufacturer may be confusing or intimidating, don’t fret! Our team has put together a breakdown of these complicated topics to help you make sense of them. Take a look at the article here: Understanding ZWO Camera Charts and Graphs, and feel more confident making the right choice for your astrophotography needs!
Sony IMX462 CMOS Sensor
This 2.12MP Sony IMX462 provides exceptional IR sensitivity. Without wires or transistors in the way of the pixel wells, the back illumination of the IMX462 allows for a high peak quantum efficiency of 89%! This effectiveness coupled with the ultra-low readout noise of 0.47-2.46e results in a superb signal to noise ratio within the frames captured. The 12bit ADC and 11.2Ke full well capacity offers a wide range of signal collection for 12 stops of dynamic range.
Electronic Highlights
When imaging with typical CMOS sensors, higher gain values deplete the dynamic range stops, resulting in lackluster photos. Thanks to the innovative developments from ZWO, the ASI462MM has an integrated High Conversion Gain mode (HCG) that automatically kicks in at a gain setting of 80. This HCG upholds the dynamic range near 12 stops while the readout noise is allowed to drop as low as 0.47e! An included DDR3 memory cache adds 256MB of internal memory for an improvement in frame transfer efficiency. This greatly reduces buffer time for a smoother imaging experience.
USB 3.0 and ST4 Guide Port
Two modes of connection are available through the ASI462MM. Further minimizing buffer time during high speed imaging is the included USB3.0 port. The large 5Gb bandwidth offers transportation of large amounts of data, even when imaging at a high speed of 136FPS! Wanting to utilize the remarkable sensitivity for guiding? Turn your ASI462MM into a powerful guide camera through the ST4 port, assisting your telescope mount in its tracking performance.
