Let’s Check out the Stats!
What exactly makes one filter better than another? How can I tell which filter will be best for my needs? To understand how well a filter performs, manufacturers provide what is called a transmission chart along with their filters. These charts give insight into the wavelengths allowed through, the bandpass, as well as the transmission percentage. It may be a bit confusing at first glance, but no need to worry, we have you covered! Our team of gear experts have crafted a comprehensive How to Read a Filter Transmission Chart guide to help you better understand the capabilities of any filters you may be interested in. With this article, you’ll be readily equipped with the knowledge needed to make a well informed, data-driven decision based on your specific needs.
Highly Detailed Images Brimming with Color
Hydrogen alpha, the brightest and most common hydrogen emission within the visible spectrum, features a wavelength of 656 nm. Isolation of this wavelength is crucial in discerning structural detail within nebulae. Now, you’ll not only be able to collect the true, stunning color of the universe with the LRGB filters, but you’ll also be able to capture intense hydrogen structure with this H-alpha filter. Featuring a super-narrow band width of 3 nm and transmittance of 99.12%, you can expect outstanding contrast on the 656 nm wavelength. Not only is this wonderful for creating natural looking images of emission nebulae, but it’s great for broadband targets that house otherwise invisible H-alpha emissions. Display the beautiful, intricate collection of dust and gas within nebulae in our own Milky Way Galaxy, and reveal the jewels of hydrogen-rich star forming regions and supernovae within faraway galaxies. There are numerous methods to incorporate H-alpha data during post processing. To name a few, you can either combine your H-alpha and red data to create a supercharged red channel, or add it to your luminance layer for a cleaner base with tighter stars. No matter how you choose to image the universe, this Chroma HaLRGB Filter Set is certain to take your astrophotography to the next level.
Suitable for Any Set Up
This Chroma filter set features five 1.25” mounted filters. The male threads on these filters have a height of 1.75 mm, and a filter cell height of 5.25 mm. With a total height of 7 mm, they fit comfortably within a large majority of the filter wheels and filter drawers on the market today. A user-supplied ZWO EFW Mini Five-Position Filter Wheel features the perfect amount of positions for this filter set, while the ZWO EFW 8-position Filter Wheel and the QHY CFW3 Small Color Filter Wheel house these five filters with room to spare! With their 1.25” diameters, it’s best to utilize cameras with sensor diagonals smaller than 31 mm. Micro Four Thirds and 1” sensors will yield the best results.
Excellence in Every Detail
Chroma Technology, innovators in cutting-edge optical development, has crafted this filter set with high performance coatings to help you capture the best images possible. These coatings are applied using a process called reactive magnetron sputtering, and help uphold image quality by preserving the spectral accuracy in the central wavelength (CWL). In addition to this, these filters are bolstered against the detrimental effects of humidity and even extreme temperature changes through this coating technology. Both surfaces of these filters are fully coated, with the rear (camera-facing) side equipped with anti-reflective (AR) coatings. The issue of image ghosting and other image distortions are eradicated, allowing you to capture pristine, crystal clear astrophotos. To increase performance even further, Chroma Technology utilizes 3.0 mm thick single substrates of the finest glass within their astronomy filters. This use of a single substrate eliminates the need for lamination, in-turn improving durability and light transmission.
