A Seven-Position Electronic Filter Wheel (EFW) for 50 mm Square Filters
When using a large imaging sensor, the common 2″ size imaging filters on the market just won’t cut it. For those using these demanding setups, ZWO has created a large filter, direct connection, CNC aluminum, filter wheel to ensure you can maximize performance!
The ZWO 7 Position Electronic Filter Wheel for 50mm Square Filters has been designed specifically with ZWO’s incredible medium-format ASI461MM Pro camera in mind. To accommodate the large sensor, this filter wheel supports the large 50mm x 50mm drop-in filter style. Providing space for seven total filters the wheel allows you to have on demand access to entire imaging pallets, such as LRGB and SHO filter sets. With the scheduling tools commonly included in current equipment control programs, you can now automate filter changes for easy multi-filter image data collection. To provide smooth and precise filter swaps, this electronic filter wheel uses a high quality stepper motor from the Japanese NPM company. The wheel is bi-directional as well, allowing you to make filter changes in the clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.
Seamless Integration
This filter wheel does not feature any threaded connections, but instead is designed to integrate directly with the ZWO ASI461MM Pro camera and the associated large M68 OAG. This is accomplished via dedicated connection points on the filter wheel, which when attached with the included hardware creates and incredibly solid imaging train!
Please Note: The above chart is a correction to the original provided by the manufacturer based on internal testing of the components.
Direct Connection Installation
Directly connecting this filter wheel to your ZWO ASI461MM Pro camera and OAG-L-68 is a straight forward process! All the hardware you need is included in the box with these three items, excluding the M3*8 screws. Please Note: The ZWO ASI461MM Pro and OAG-L-68 are sold separately.
Begin by removing the filter wheel cover which is held in place with eight screws attached along the outside of the filter wheel housing as indicated in image 1 below. Additionally remove the tilt plates from both the OAG and camera by removing the highlighted screws from image 1. The filter wheel assembly will also need to be removed, which is held in place with the four screws highlighted in yellow on image 1. With the wheel removed, use five of the twelve included M2.5 screws to connect the filter wheel directly to the camera – inserting the screw through the filter wheel housing and threading it into the front of the camera via the points shown in image 2.
Now connect the filter wheel cover to the OAG in a similar fashion; using four M3*8 screws here (not included), insert them through the filter wheel cover holes highlighted in image 3 and thread into the OAG. Again if desired insert darkening rings between the filter wheel cover and OAG as shown in image 4. At this point the ASI461MM Pro’s tilt plate can be installed to the front of the OAG for an M68 connection. The filter wheel assembly can now be reinstalled, filters secured in with the included masks and M2 screws, and the cover reattached!
Seven Filter Capacity, Common Connection Protocols, and the Accessories You’ll Need!
The ZWO 7 Position Electronic Filter Wheel for 50mm Square Filters for ASI461MM-P makes room for large number of filters, supports the ubiquitous ASCOM standard, and includes all the hardware you’ll need to install this in your camera & OAG setup.
Filter Compatability
This filter wheel holds seven large 50mm x 50mm drop-in/ unmounted square style filters for large sensor coverage, such as the medium format sensor found in the ASI461MM Pro! Filters must be between 3-4mm in thickness; and are held securely in place with the included filter masks and M2 screws.
Means of Control
Control of the filter wheel is handled via an external device connect to the USB 2.0 port on this product. To ensure wide compatibility, ZWO has ensured this is not just compatible with their popular ASIAIR systems but also the widely used ASCOM standard – allowing you to control this from a wide variety of PC software! This often allows for not just easy filter changes, but also the ability to schedule filter changes in the planning tools commonly available with these programs – opening up automation possibilities.
Included Accessories
Included with this seven-position electronic filter wheel is everything needed to integrate the unit into your astrophotography setup and begin filtered imaging. Along with the EFW body is a two-meter long USB 2 right-angle cable to power the unit, a 0.5 meter USB 2 right-angle cable, a 2.0×75 mm cross (Phillips) screwdriver, a set of darkening rings, ten 50×50 mm filter masks, twenty-six M2x4 screws, and twelve M2.5×6 screws.
