Celestron has changed the specs for the new version of the CPC 11″. It’s new format is just wider than any of the hard cases (JMI) so it will not fit. I have just finished building a wooden case for long term storage and protection of the scope. I do like this case for protection of my investment while traveling to a dark sky site for a nights vie
wing. It is not perfect however. It has two handles for carrying the case. The case looks like it has handles on the front, but this is just the extra web strapping and clips for cinching the case tight to the scope. The two handles are on the top and bottom of the case. If you use these to carry the scope you are carrying the scope horizontally rather than vertically, probably not a big deal, but I would rather carry it upright to protect the goto drive and accessories. The big complaint is the handles are hard plastic. They sit on the top and bottom of the bag, so when you are placing the scope into the bag the scope does not sit flat. The hard plastic handle causes the scope to lean which could cause the scope to topple over. I have not figured out how to remove the hard plastic from the bottom without damaging the web strap. The handle has an outer case for grip and an inner piece that is inside the web strap. I have not tried to remove it yet, there is not any play on the handle, so it may be glued or fused in place, and the inner core looks like it needs to be cutout from the strap. Anyway I can see trying to remove it will damage the strap and I don’t want to do that… My only other thought is a donut shape of plywood to set under the bag allowing a recess for the handle and a steady platform for loading and unloading. The quality is 100%, I expect many years of use while moving to a site for viewing, but longterm storage I want something more, hence the homemade wooden crate. Very large for my 11″ CPC, I think a 9.25″ would need extra padding, a pillow or bath towels kinda of thing. 5 Stars, but be aware of the potential for tipping because of the bottom handle. Thanks for letting me ramble on. Now I need to listen to some Led Zeppelin….
