Ultra Compact, Yet Mighty
A miniature titan from iOptron—sporting an 18 lb.
payload capacity, modern connectivity functionality,
and dual EQ/AltAz modes in a package weighing just 5.7
lb.! For those looking for an ultra-portable option,
this mighty hybrid strain wave mount from the leaders
in weight:payload capacity conventional mounts is hard
to beat. Join the powerful portable New Wave, with the
iOptron HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid SWG Mount!
Weighing in at around half of what conventionally
geared lightweight mounts of this weight class (26.5
lb. with an optional counterweight and counterweight
shaft) do, the iOptron HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid SWG
Mount is a powerful portable contender. This is all
housed in a solid CNC machined and cast blend of
construction materials for a sleek and strong build
that iOptron’s offerings are known for. Tailored for
the modern astronomer, this mount is compatible with
not just a traditional hand controller (sold
separately), but also the most popular computer/ WiFi
control standards of today, ASCOM and INDI. Wireless
control can also be established through your mobile
device via the iOptron Commander Lite app for
simplified control without needing to bring along
extra gear! Advanced functionality has been added as
well, with a zero-position search and locator function
and an electronic-friction brake for gear protection
in the event of a power outage.
Please Note: This mount does not come with a tripod. It is compatible with the iOptron 40 mm Carbon Fiber Tripod.
Miniature Strain Wave Titan
The New Wave of strain wave geared mounts is ushering
in lighter and more portable designs than ever before,
and the manufacturer of some of the lightest
conventionally geared mounts, iOptron, has been quick
to integrate this technology into their line up to
build mini titans like the HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid
SWG Mount. At just 5.7 lb., this mount can lift an
impressive 18 lb. without a counterweight for an
impressive 1:3 weight:payload capacity. This
technology has also allowed for dual EQ/AltAz
functionality without the added bulk or complication
of conventionally geared dual systems; with this mount
converting from EQ to Alt/Az in just a matter of
minutes!
Powerful Feature Set
iOptron mounts are well known for their robust feature
set, and the HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid SWG Mount is
no exception! With a hybrid drive system, integration
with modern control systems, and all the essential
connections you need (and then some!), this mount is a
fully featured base for your astrophotography rig.
Hybrid Strain Wave Power
Powering the iOptron HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid SWG
Mount is a hybrid strain-wave/conventional gear
system, providing extra muscle only where you need
it! Incorporating a strain wave 14 gear on the
important RA axis, this mount is capable of
shouldering 18 lb. of equipment without a
counterweight, or with the
iOptron Counterweight Shaft
and
iOptron 4.4 lb. Counterweight
(sold separately) 26.5 lb. of gear. This axis is
supported by a friction brake, ensuring your gear is
safe in the event of a power failure. The DEC axis
is driven by conventional gearing, with a
backlash-free worm and belt system. iOptron states
that this hybrid system “delivers tracking accuracy
that other [strain wave gear] mounts can’t match”!
To make zeroing these axes easy, this mount features
zero-position search and locator technology.
Modern Control Solution Capable
The iOptron
HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid SWG Mount is highly
versatile when it comes to control, supporting
multiple wired and wireless control options. With
support for both of the most popular astronomy
equipment control platforms, ASCOM (Windows) and
INDI (MacOS and Linux), this mount can be controlled
with all the most popular computers, WiFi camera
control systems, and programs! iOptron’s Commander
program for Windows provides both wired USB and
wireless WiFi control functionality for this mount,
with their iOptron Commander Lite app providing a
wireless mobile control solution. Finally, for those
interested in a more hands-on control method, the
iOptron GOTONova Controller 8411
(sold separately) can be used with this mount for a
hand controller control experience.
Core Connections Covered
iOptron has
included all the essential connections you
need—and then some! For wired control
connections the iOptron HAE16C Ultra Compact Hybrid
SWG Mount main housing features a USB-C connection
for external computer control solutions, and a hand
controller port for the use of separately available
iOptron GOTONova 8411 Controller. 12V 5A DC power is
supplied via the 5.5×2.1 mm connection on the mount
housing. In addition to these core connections, this
mount features two extra ports on the DEC
saddle—one 5.5×2.1 mm DC power connection, and one USB-C
port for mount control—providing a cable-snag
free way to connect and power telescope mounted
control solutions. Finally, WiFi has been built-in
to make connecting to your mount at a distance a
snap!
Polar Alignment
Designed
with modern WiFi camera control systems and software
imaging suites in mind, this mount does not feature
a polar scope or tool to manually polar align the
mount. Accordingly separate tools such as the Polar
Alignment Assistant in SharpCap Pro, the Polar
Alignment mode in the
ZWO ASIAIR Plus WiFi Camera Controller, drift polar alignment in PHD2, or some other
similar tool, will be necessary to use this mount in
EQ mode. For Alt/AZ use, a bubble level has been
installed on the main housing to assist with
leveling the mount.
New Wave Harmonic
With its use of
strain wave gearing on the RA axis for a compact but
powerful package, the iOptron HAE16C Ultra Compact
Hybrid SWG Mount comfortably fits both portable and
dedicated backyard imaging rigs alike. Able to mount
to the ultra portable
iOptron Carbon Fiber Tripod
and stow away into the included soft carry case,
this mount is perfect for shouldering a good amount
of gear on-the-go; however when combined with the
optional counterweight shaft and counterweight, it
treads in the territory of a more permanent backyard
solution with its 26.5 lb. payload capacity.
Accordingly this mount receives our New Wave
Harmonic badge! To read more about this emerging
