Tom W. Verified Buyer –
A Good Beginner Solar scope and filter Package.
I bought this DayStar Solar Scout Solar package so I would be certain that I
had everything that I needed to start viewing the sun when I received it.
Once I contained my desire to see the sun through it right away I was not disappointed!
I say contained my desire to use it upon s
etting it up, is the need for the filter to heat to the
wave length setting it was tuned for. This took about 5minuits or there about to stabilize.
I had fun viewing the Solar disk at this H-Alpha spectrum,
following the manual suggested setting.
However it wasn’t long before my curiosity took over and I adjusted the
filter tuning the 4/5 positions on ether side of the recommended starting point.
This shifted the color to the red when tuned to the right of the ‘bottom’ starting position and blue
when tuned to the left.
I find waiting the 5-10min. for the filter to stabilize after each adjustment difficult
as I’m eager to find what can be seen!
But to me, at least, it is usually worth the wait!
Now the real challenge is when trying to take images. The manual describes
the Newton Interference Rings that occur because of the camera imaging sensor and the
H-Alpha filter surface. The manual describes this enough for general understanding of this
why for this to happen.
After talking with the Daystar Filter service person I bought the interference filter from Highpoint Scientific
and the interface connector from DayStar Filters. It was a very time consuming and some what tedious processes,
BUT Well worth the Time and effort!! The images were very nice. When the Sun Spots occurred in May 2019,
I eagerly waited foe the clouds to go away. Which they never completely did, however the high thin clouds, while affecting the sharpness slightly of the images, I was very pleased with what I was able to photograph!!
I give it four stars only because of the wait time and the extra cord/battery, which are what make the scope so good,
but just adds to the equipment needed for viewing.
Would I recommend it? YES!! Given the same budget and place that I have easy access for viewing I’d make the same decision.
Buy, Read the manual, Set it up according to the recommended settings/procedures and enjoy the viewing! Then experiment with settings
eyepieces and cameras. Hint I used a ZWO AS120mm-Simaging camera and SharpCap imaging software,FREE Download from their website. Set gain about 33-40, shutter 12000th, Brightness 1 Gamma 1-3. USB turbo OFF to start. Setting turbo depends on the computer.
